Tamil Nadu got its third government in less than a year. After former chief minister J Jayalalithaa won the elections in May 2016, she was sworn in as the CM. The then governor, K Rosaiah administered the oath of office to her and 28 other ministers.

However, following her death in December 2016, a new chief minister had to be sworn in. O Panneerselvam who was an ardent Jayalalithaa loyalist, was sworn in as the CM in the wee hours of December 6. The oath to him and his ministers was administered by stand-in Governor of Tamil Nadu, Vidyasagar Rao. Along with OPS, 31 ministers were sworn in on December 6, 2016.

February 16 witnessed another swearing-in ceremony. This time it was Edapaddi Palanisami who took oath of office as the chief minister along with 30 other ministers. It was Rao who administered the oath of office this time around too.

Since the AIADMK won the elections in May 2016, the party has witnessed several ups and downs. There were complaints that Jayalalithaa was never seen in public. Rumours regarding her health had already started doing the rounds and many had spoken about her successor. However, Jayalalithaa appeared on and off before the cameras.

After Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital, rumour mills were in full flow about her health. Demands were growing to appoint a stand-in chief minister since she was unable to discharge her duties. The AIADMK however resisted all the pressure and did not choose another leader. Following her death, OPS was sworn in as CM.
