A police officer, who was an eyewitness, was quoted as saying, "Maya had come along with her daughter and a can of kerosene. Both tried to self-immolate themselves, but they were luckily stopped by officials on duty."

Continuing his statement, the officer also added, "She decided to end her as well as her daughter's life because she was upset with the verdict against Jayalalitha. They wanted to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Amma (Jayalalitha)."
Jayalalithaa has been convicted in Rs 66.6 crore disproportionate assets case by a special court in Bangalore. She has sentenced four years jail and has been imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore. She was lodged in Parappana Agrahara jail in Bangalore on Sept 27.
She was likely to move the Supreme Court as Karnataka High Court rejected her bail plea on Oct 7. Senior advocate Ram Jethmalani, who represented the AIADMK chief in the high court, informed media that his client may approach the apex court seeking bail.
