Sushma in LS: Government gives highest priority to Indian fishermen
She added that matters of apprehension of Indian fishermen are consistently taken up with the Government of Sri Lanka.
New Delhi, March 16: External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Thursday in Lok Sabha made a statement on the firing at Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy. She said that all the fishermen who were captured by Lankan navy have been released and 77 fishermen returned to India on Tuesday.
She informed the Lok, "Our government attaches highest important to the welfare of the Indian fishermen." She added that matters of apprehension of Indian fishermen are consistently taken up with the Lankan government.
She also added that Indian government also uses diplomatic channels to take up the matter of Indian fishermen with the Lankan government.
She said, "In no uncertain terms, the government gives the highest priority to Indian fishermen. The issue has been taken up with Sri Lanka. They have reassured us that further action will be taken to investigate the matter. They also said that a probe had been ordered."
