Srinagar, Sept 7: A protest shutdown against the failure of the Jammu and Kashmir government to provide relief to the 2014 flood victims on Monday impacted life here, with markets and schools being shut and public transports going off roads.

The shutdown has been called by traders, transport operators and industrialists.

On September 7, 2014, the Kashmir Valley was affected by unprecedented floods and almost the entire civil lines areas and commercial hubs of Srinagar city were submerged in flood waters that took over a month to drain out.

Authorities placed senior separatist leaders, including Syed Ali Geelani, Muhammad Yasin Malik and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, under house arrest in Srinagar city to prevent their participation in the protest march proposed by the various traders' organisations.

Although authorities did not impose official restrictions in any part of Srinagar city, heavy presence of police and paramilitary central reserve police force was seen in both old and uptown areas.

Kashmir University ordered cancellation of all exams scheduled for the day.
