Surprising: Sonia, Rahul Gandhi endorse Narendra Modi's scheme, adopt 2 villages
New Delhi, Nov 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi might be happy to know that even Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi too responded to his call by adopting two villages under the Saansad Adarsh Gram" scheme.
Modi launched the scheme on the occasion of birth anniversary of Jai Prakash Narayan in Oct 2014 as he promised during his maiden Independence Day speech.
The Congress President and Vice President adopted village Udwa from Jagatpur block in Rae Bareli and village 'Deeh' in Jagdishpur block in Amethi respectively. Mrs Gandhi and her son represent the two Parliamentary constituencies.
Rahul's adopted villages falls under an area which was industrialised during his father late Rajiv Gandhi's Prime Ministerial tenure. Udwa in Jagatpur is also the birthplace of Rana Beni Madhav and has a rich historical background. While the Gandhis's move is a clear indication that they have been endorsing Modi's scheme, Congress party sources refused to accept that.
Launching the scheme, Modi had said that if nearly 800 MPs develop three village each by 2019, around 2,500 villages will be covered in the country and the initiative will change the face of the country by chain reaction.
The Centre had recently extended the deadline by one more week for adopting villages under the plan. The Prime Minister himself has adopted Jayapur village in his Parliamentary constituency Varanasi.
