Sonia hits out at BJP over J&K polls

Speaking at the event, Sonia said: "Polls are taking place at a time when people of Kashmir are yet to come to terms with the devastation caused by floods.

Elections are taking place at a time when you have faced a natural disaster (floods). It does not feel good to talk politics (but) the relief and rehabilitation work is going on a very slow pace."

Sonia: What has happened now when there is a BJP government

"What has happened now when there is a BJP government (at the Centre)? It seems they are not interested. BJP leaders came and promised the sky but did not give anything. Even what the state (government) asked was not given," she said, hitting out at the BJP.

A large number of women attended the rally. Sonia Gandhi and Congress leader Ambika Soni were accompanied by former chief minister G H Nabi Azad and Saif-ud-din Soz.

People were chanting slogans in favor of local Congress candidate Usman Majeed. The people also chanted pro-Islamic slogans as the Congress president arrived at the venue.

It is one of the largest attended rallies for the first phase of elections scheduled to be held on November 25.
