Lucknow, Dec 19:In a fresh setback to an already decimated Congress in Uttar Pradesh, Anant Vikram, the estranged son of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Sinh has announced his decision to join rival BJP. The leader will officially join the saffron party on Dec 21, when the leader will take the primary membership of the party in the presence of BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpayi and others.

Anant coming under the BJP fold follows a series of meeting with Union HRD minister Smriti Irani, who contested from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat against Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, and BJP organisation secretary Sunil Bansal.

As per a TOI report, Anant Vikram was quoted as saying, "My decision to join the BJP follows prolonged deliberations over the issue. I have found that the BJP is far more proactive party at the grassroots than any other. This is the reason why I approached the BJP leadership and decided to become its member."

This move will certainly dent the Congress' reputation in the state. Congress' condition is very critical in the Hindi heartland of Uttar Pradesh, which once used to be the party's stronghold. Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi as well as Rahul Gandhi are Parliamentarians from the state but the party's performance in the Lok Sabha polls was humiliating and leaders deserting the party in a crucial time like this is not at all good for the grand-old-party of India.

Earlier on Nov 9, Ajatshatru Singh, son of senior Congress leader Karan Singh, joined the BJP just before the start of assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. The move was considered would strengthen the party's foothold in the state ahead of Assembly polls.

Ajatshatru's joining was aimed at giving a boost to BJP's prospects in the Jammu region. BJP also took back its expelled senior leader Chaman Lal Gupta ahead of the polls in its attempt to strengthen the party.
