New Delhi, Dec 10: In a key verdict, the Supreme Court on Tuesday directed that red non-flashing beacon lights be used only by Constitutional authorities.

The apex court also asked Central and state governments to come out with a list of authorities entitled to use the beacon lights.

The court explained that blue flashing beacon lights can be used by ambulances, police and emergency services.

The court also put a restriction on multi-tune horns saying they be removed from all vehicles including heavy vehicles.

The court says the sirens would only be used on the emergency and police vehicles but the sound should not be unduly harsh and shrill.

SC added that strict penanlty will be imposed on those who violate the rules.

The court has directed all states and Central government to bring in a law in a month's time.

Earlier, the apex court had said that the use of red beacons by authorities is reminiscent of British Raj. The court had stated that a regular review should be done by a committee headed by a High Court judge.
