Sanjay Dutt parole extension: Center seeks justification from Maha gov

Sanjay Dutt
Mumbai, Feb 25: The Centre has confronted the Maharashtra government regarding the repeated parole extension of 1993 Mumbai blast accused and actor Sanjay Dutt.

The Home Ministry has written to the government seeking justification as to why the 54-year old actor was given "special privileges" of parole thrice in the past 9 months of jail.

Dutt was convicted by the Supreme Court for illegal possession of arms and was sentenced to 6 years of jail. While he has already served 18 months of the term, he had surrendered before the Mumbai court in May to serve the remaining years.

Dutt was out on parole on December 21 and was to report to the Yerawada jail in Pune on February 21, but was granted an extension till March 21. Dutt is reported to have appealed for an extension to be with his ailing wife and the twin kids.

On February 25, the Bombay High Court is expected to take up a petition , questioning the grounds on which he was granted parole.
