The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) granted the security cover to Som after it believed that there was serious threat to Som's life.
Som is one of the main accused in last year's Muzaffarnagar riots and is accused of instigating violence in the city.
Soon after MHA granted the security cover to Som, politicians cried foul and said that Som didn't deserve any security. Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi objected to the security cover and said: "He (Som) was a threat to the society."
Meanwhile Congress leader Manish Tewari said 'it is ironical that riot victims are homeless while the accused are being given security.'
RJD's Manoj Jha said: "Riot victims haven't got justice and the accused is getting security. This is bizarre."
MHA on the other hand clarified that Som will be given the security only in Uttar Pradesh.
