New Delhi, June 3: After a serious road accident on his way to the Indira Gandhi International Airport to Mumbai for a victory rally, the new rural development minister Gopinath Munde incurred  injuries and was brought dead to the AIIMS hospital.

Sources say that he had a cardiac arrest happened immediately after the accident. Final word from the doctors said that there was no cardiac activity, which could not be revived.

Party members and a fellow Cabinet ministers Nitin Gadkari and Harsh Vardhan confirmed the timeline of events, saying that the accident happened in 6:20 am when he was on his way to the airport. His flight to Mumbai was at 6:30 am. The accident happened close to Sri LK Advani's home when the car was travelling from Lodhi Road to Aurobindo Chowk . However, the object with which it has collided is yet to be affirmed.

Although there were no major external injuries, high sugar and hypertension (for which he was under medication) may have led to the arrest.

He asked to be taken to the hospital

It is said that he was sitting alone behind in the vehicle and his security guard Nair was sitting in front. According to Nair,  the minister fell inside the car due to the impact of the collision and requested to be given water and taken to the hospital. However, he lost unconsciousness before he could reach the Safdarjung hospital. Between 7:45 am and 7:50 am, he was declared dead. Right now, the post-mortem report will be done for the final report.

Gadkari said that the body will be taken to the BJP party headquarters between 12-12:30 pm. After 12:30 pm, he and his family members will be flown to his hometown Parali, Marathwada in Maharashtra where the last rites will be done with full government honour tomorrow. His family has been informed. He was the brother in law of politician Pramod Mahajan who was shot dead.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi may also visit the party headquarters for paying his last rites.  

Munde won 2014 Loksabha election from Beed Constituency by margin of 2 lacs. He defeated NCP's Suresh Dhas.Subsequently, he is appointed as Minister of Rural Development by Prime minister Narendra Modi.
