Reliability of Rs 3,610 crore Akash missile questioned by CAG

The CAG said in its report that the missiles were to be deployed in the 'S'sector (northeast) during 2013-15 for deterrence. However the target has not yet been achieved, the report said.

The report said that out of 80 missiles received up to November 2014, 20 missiles were test fired during April-November 2014. Six of these missiles i.e., 30%, failed the test.

A preliminary analysis has revealed that the missiles fell short of the target. They were low on velocity the report said while adding that the critical components malfunctioned.

Two of the missiles failed to even take off. These deficiencies pose an operational risk during hostilities, the report also said.

A decision was taken in 2010 to deploy the missiles in northeast. The report which refers to the missiles as 'Z" were purchased from the Bharat Electronics Limited for a cost of Rs 3,610 crore.
