Rain continues to play havoc in Kerala, two die
Kochi, May 9: Torrential rains, accompanied by strong winds, triggered by a low pressure over Kanyakumari area, lashed parts of Kerala, especially the capital city and suburbs today.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy rainfall would occur in many parts of the State till May 9.

"Widespread heavy rain is expected all over Kerala. It is likely to continue till May 9," director of IMD Centre here K. Santhosh told PTI.

The present spell of rain was due to a system of low pressure formed over Commorin area. It would further intensify into a depression and move north-westwards tomorrow, IMD sources said.

While Thiruvananthapuram received 31.3 mm rainfall on Tuesday, Neyyattinkara, a nearby suburb, got 38 mm rainfall.

Punalur in Kollam district and Taliparamba in Kannur received rainfall of 27.8 mm and 26.6 mm rainfall, sources said.

Incessant rain brought many roads and low-lying areas under knee-deep water in many parts of the capital city. Trees uprooted by heavy winds also caused traffic snarls in some areas. Police and fire force were geared up to remove fallen branches of trees.

As the sea is expected to be rough due to strong winds, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea during the period.
