Lucknow, April 18: At a time when the Samajwadi Party looks in shambles, especially after the humiliating defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, senior party leader Shivpal Yadav asked his nephew and party president, Akhilesh Yadav, to bring unity in the party and the Yadav family.
Talking to reporters at Mainpuri, Shivpal said, "Pura ghar ek karen, puri party ek karen, jo kaha pura karen, naitikta bhi dikhayen (Unite the entire family, unite the party, fulfill your promises and follow the path of virtue)."
He added that Akhilesh should make party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav as the president of the SP. Currently, Akhilesh is holding the post.
"Akhilesh ne jo kaha, chunav se pehle, teen mahine ho chuke hain, Netaji ko Rashtriya Adhyaksh bana den, pura ghar ek ho jaayen (It has been three months since Akhilesh promised to make Mulayam (Netaji) the party president. Make Netaji the party president and the whole family would be united."
Since the last few months, the entire Yadav family is fighting a very public internal battle. Currently, the SP is divided into camps--one headed by Akhilesh and the second by his father Mulayam. Shivpal is a part of his brother Mulayam's camp.
Just before the elections, the party was on the verge of division as Akhilesh 'forcefully' took over the reins of the party from his father and become the party president.
Recently, in reply to Akhilesh's idea of a grand-alliance of all parties opposed to the Bharatiya Janata Party for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Mulayam told reporters that the SP was capable of fighting elections alone. Mulayam was opposed to party's alliance with the Congress in the recently concluded assembly polls.
