‘Project Cow’: Centre plans for cow sanctuary in each state
Ahir has also discussed the matter with the environment ministry and plan is to expedite the proposal.
Minister of State for Home Hansraj G Ahir on Friday said that the government is considering a proposal to set up cow sanctuaries and start a 'Project Cow' on the lines of Project Tiger.
The minister told a leading daily that the cow sanctuaries will be set up under such a scheme. ''We have been considering a proposal and have been working on it for some time now. We need to stop cow slaughter, but the biggest stumbling block is who will take care of these cows," Ahir said.
Ahir has also discussed the matter with the environment ministry and plan is to expedite the proposal.
When asked about the video of man being tied to an army jeep in Kashmir, Ahir who also handles Jammu and Kashmir division in the ministry said that the security forces have shown restraint while dealing with protesters in the Kashmir Valley.
Ahir's remarks come at a time when there are a growing number of reports of gau rakshaks using violence to demand a ban on cow slaughter and beef. On April 4, a dairy farmer in Alwar in Rajasthan, was lynched by a mob that accused him of smuggling cattle.
