New Delhi, April 14: After much speculations and allegations against her, Priyanka Gandhi finally broke her silence regarding contesting poll against Narendra Modi from Varanasi. Reacting strongly against media reports, Priyanka on Monday, April 14 clarified that not to contest this Lok Sabha election was her "personal decision".

Priyanka's statement surfaced just hours after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy's shocking allegations against her. Swamy said, "They (Congress leaders) saved her. She would have got a thrashing. She is very unpopular, she drinks too much alcohol and she has a bad name, her husband has a bad name."

Swamy also criticised Priyanka for stating that her cousin brother Varun Gandhi "is on the wrong path." The BJP leader called her an ungrateful daughter for going to see the prisoners in jail who assassinated her own father. He also said that it was Priyanka Gandhi and not Varun Gandhi who has gone astray and had added that the former and her party were not able to digest the latter's success.

Media reports stated that Priyanka was willing to contest from Varanasi seat against Narendra Modi but was denied ticket by Congress leaders.Priyanka, however, trashed reports that she wanted to challenge BJP's prime ministerial candidate and was stopped by the party high command, stating it is a "personal" decision not to contest and that her family would "wholeheartedly support" her if she ever wanted to.

"My decision to not contest is personal. I will only change it shen I feel from within that I should," she said. She went on to reinforce her earlier remarks that she wanted to campaign only in Amethi, from where her brother is contesting, and in Rae Bareli, from where her mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi is fighting.

There have been speculation that Congress is keen on Priyanka playing a bigger role in the party. "My brother, mother and husband (Robert Vadra) would wholeheartedly support me if I ever wanted to (contest)," 42-year-old Priyanka said.
