New Delhi, Dec 5: Senior Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi has been in the Apollo Hospital in New Delhi since 2008.
The former MP and information and broadcasting minister was admitted to the Apollo hospital in 2008 after he suffered a stroke and a paralytic attack.
One of the most popular leaders in the Congress, he suffered a massive stroke that left him paralysed and unable to speak.
Blood supply to a part of his brain was cut off, which caused irreversible damage. Reports suggested that his body systems are functional.
However he breathes through a tracheostomy tube attached to his neck and is fed through a tube in his stomach. He is not conscious of his surroundings, a report said.
In 2014, after the BJP came to power at the centre, the health minister had said that the government would continue to pay for Dasmunsi's stay at the Apollo hospital in Delhi.
He has been under supportive care at the hospital for several years now. Doctors had said that the care could be replicated at home with trained staff and the 69 year old leader did not need mechanical help to perform essential body functions.
Recently the name of the leader had cropped when the Congress had put his name in the 90 member campaign committee for the recently held West Bengal elections. The 19th name on the list was that of Dasmunsi's who continues to be in coma.
