Presidential elections: In defeat, Meira Kumar broke a 1967 record
On Thursday Ram Nath Kovind won the Presidential elections. He polled 7.02 lakh votes while Meira bagged 3.67 lakh out of the 10.69 lakh valid votes.
Meira Kumar who lost the Presidential election to Ram Nath Kovind bagged 3.67 lakh out of the 10.69 valid votes polled. Although she lost, she has something to cheer about as she became the losing candidate with the highest votes polled.
The losing who had polled the highest votes before her was Kota Subbarao who polled 3.63 lakh votes against Dr Zakir Hussain in 1967.

In 1992 G G Swell secured 3.46 votes against Shankar Dayal Sharma. In 2012 P A Sangma who contested against Pranab Mukherjee won 3.15 lakh votes.
In the first ever Presidential poll, K T Shah won 92,827 votes. He was contesting against Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
