Poverty's slap on democracy: Woman sells her new-born baby for Rs 50,000
Gayathri gave birth to her third child on October 28 when she shared her misery with her neighbours. She confided that she would not be able to take care of her three children within her meagre income.
Her neighbours, Seenappa and Parvathamma, in turn suggested that they sell the baby to a needy couple. A deal was sealed between her and a childless couple Srinivas and Gayathri from Manchanabele. The baby was finally sold to the couple for Rs 50,000 on November 1, said sub-inspector CB Shivaswamy, Chikkaballapur.
To avert unwanted questions from other neighbours, the baby's mother filed a case with the police, saying that the child was stolen. However, the police grew suspicious as her statements were incoherent on every occasion. Finally, during interrogation, she confessed to have sold the baby.
Following this, the police arrested the middlemen and the Chikkaballapur couple and the middlemen. However, Gayathri has been spared for the time being as she gave birth to a baby recently.
