Dhanteras is celebrated before the festival of lights, Diwali. Dhanteras is the first day of the five-day-long celebration of Diwali festival.
Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped by Hindus on this day to provide prosperity and well being in their houses.
Dhanteras is traditionally the country's busiest gold buying period as buying the precious metal is considered auspicious on this day.
People buy new items and utensils on this day. Markets are flooded with people who come out for buying all sorts of items on this day.
Also, the share market will be opened between 4pm to 5pm today for trading as businessmen considered it auspicious.
