New Delhi, Oct 21: Every year on October 21, rich tributes are paid to the policemen who sacrifice their lives while discharging their duties. The day is observed as the National Police Commemoration Day, in their remembrance.

The history behind the observance of this day on October 21 is said to be that in 1959, on the same day, twenty Indian soldiers were attacked by the Chinese troops in Ladakh, during which ten were killed and seven were imprisoned and others managed to escape.

The dead bodies of the martyred policemen were handed over to India by the Chines troops on November 28, 1959 and then, their cremation was held with full Police honours at the Hot springs in Ladakh.

In the national capital Delhi, Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde paid tributes to martyred police personnel on this solemn occasion at the Police Memorial, Chanakyapuri.

Several ministers, cabinet secretary, home secretary and senior police officers were reportedly present on the occasion.

Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 every year to mark the martyrdom of policemen killed in Ladakh in 1959 and to pay tribute to all other police personnel killed on duty during the year.
