Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 17: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has urged to avoid meat and dairy products during this Christmas festivities.

"Millions of animals could be spared daily abuse on factory farms and a terrifying and painful death if more people simply switched to a healthy, humane vegan diet", PETA India's Grishma Myatra said in a release here today.

"We urge everyone to consider making Christmas a joyous time for animals too by leaving meat, eggs and dairy products off their dinner tables," she said.

Chickens, cows and other animals on factory farms are treated like meat and milk machines and are denied everything that is natural and important to them.

They are confined to crowded, filthy cages and other enclosures. During slaughter, many have their throats cut while they're still conscious.

Pigs are often stabbed in the heart as they scream in pain, it said.

Consumption of meat, eggs and dairy products has been conclusively linked to heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity and cancer, it added.

The volunteers of PETA, dressed in the traditional attires of Santa Claus, organised a demonstration also in the city today to invite the attention of people to the cause.
