Mumbai, July 7: The murderer of 25-year old lawyer and National-level swimmer has been sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, trespassing and molestation.

Sajjad Ahmad Moghul, 22, the watchman at Pallavi's apartment was found guilty of the brutal murder last week during the quantum of sentence hearing. Special Public Prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam sought the death penalty for Sajjad, highlighting the fact that the victim had 16 injuries.

"The crime was committed in the most ghastly manner possible. Her cut her trachea so that she could not speak, shout or weep. The postmortem shows that she had over 16 injuries. This crime falls into the rarest of rare category and he should be sentenced to death," he said.

On August 9, 2012, Sajjad stole Pallavi's flat keys and sneaked into her flat when she was asleep. When he tried to rape her, Pallavi resisted which is when he started stabbing her before slitting her throat.

Bloodstains on the corridor and on the neighbours doorbell were proof of her struggle to seek help before she was dragged back into the apartment. Her body was discovered in a pool of blood by his lawyer boyfriend Avik Sengupta, who lived with her, who returned home from work the next day.

A hysterical Sumita Purkayastha said,"Our daughter died this way. She was everything to us. (Sajjad) deserves nothing less than death."
