Odisha likely to have rain due to deep depression in 24 hours

Bhubaneswar, May 18: Odisha is likely to experience rain and thundershower under the impact of a deep depression that centered over west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, about 780 km south-southwest of Gopalpur.

The IMD said in its first cyclone alert that rain and thundershower would occur at a few places over south Odisha and at one or two places over north Odisha during the next 24 hours.

"The system is likely to continue to move north- northeastwards along and off Andhra Pradesh Coast and further intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours," the IMD alert said adding that it (system) is likely to move northeastwards along and off north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha Coasts during subsequent 48 hours.

While the storm warning signals of Distant Cautionary Signal Number one (DC-I) was hoisted at Paradip and Gopalpur ports in Odisha, the IMD predicted that gusty surface wind speed from southerly direction in south Odisha Coast and southwesterly direction in north Odisha coast reaching 45 to 50 kmph with gusting to 55 kmph would prevail along and off Odisha coast.

"Fishermen are advised not to venture into sea in Odisha coast in view of the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal," it said.
