Now Subramanian Swamy bats for Anandiben Patel as next President of India
With the term of president Pranab Mukherjee coming to an end in July, the race for the top job is on.
Bharatiya Janata Party's MP Subramanian Swamy has backed former chief minister of Gujarat as the next President of India.
President Pranab Mukherjee is to complete his term in July this year and the names on who will take his place have been doing the rounds.
These include BJP's patriarch L K Advani, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat, NCP's Sharad Pawar and film actor Amitabh Bachchan.
While Shiv Sena backed Bhagwat recently, he has ruled himself out. Where as names of Advani and Bachchan have been ruled out due to various controversies they find themselves entangled in.
Swamy, who is currently a Rajya Sabha member and a former law minister of India has added another name to the ever-growing list by backing former chief minister Anandiben Patel to be the next president.
He tweeted, "One of the best candidates for President is former Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel. So what if she is Gujarati? I too am Gujarat's son in law."
Patel took over from Narendra Modi as the chief minister after he became prime minister following the 2014 lok sabha elections.
She was the first female chief minister of Gujarat and remained in office till August 2016, when she was replaced by the current incumbent Vijay Rupani.
A Rajya Sabha MP in the 90's, she has been elected to the state assembly ever since and was incharge of multiple ministries in the Gujarat government eventually rising to be the CM.
Elections for the 14th President of India are to be held before President Mukherjee demits office but there is no certainty as of yet on who will replace him.
