Earlier this month, several BJP MLAs assaulted the legislator from Langate after he hosted the beef party in the lawns of MLA hostel in Srinagar, with the guests being served beef kebabs, 'ristas' (meat balls) and beef patties.
As BJP MLAs assaulted him, several NC and Congress MLAs rushed to save him. The beef row erupted after a division bench of High Court in Jammu directed the state to strictly implement the ban in the state as per the law.
The order evoked strong resentment from various quarters with many separatist and religious organisations terming it as "interference in religious affairs" and sought revocation of the law, besides pressing for implementation of ban on liquor in the state. The issue is now before the Supreme Court.
Earlier, last week, well-known columnist and socio-political-activist Sudheendra Kulkarni's face was smeared by black paint by some Shiv Sena workers on Monday, Oct 12 morning. The attack came in the backdrop of Kulkarni's refusal to cancel an event of a book launch of former Pakistani foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri in Mumbai over Shiv Sena's demand.
