The government will introduce plastic bullets to counter the stone pelters in Jammu and Kashmir. Home Ministry officials said that the non-penetrative plastic bullets may be used in Jammu and Kashmir for crowd control or stone-pelting.
The ministry however pointed out that the pellet guns will not be done away with. It would be used as a last resort under the non-lethal category, sources also said. The process of using plastic bullets is already underway. Several thousand plastic bullets have already been manufactured and sent out to Kashmir. These bullets would be fired from the INSAS rifles.
The security forces who battle stone pelters and bombers in the Valley have been criticised for using pellet guns. The government was working on an alternative. The security forces have been using PAVA shells and pellet guns as a last option under the non-lethal category. For smaller incidents, the security forces would use the plastic bullets to be fired from the INSAS rifles.
