In Egypt, the country's revolutionary activists, relatively muted since the country's July coup, showed a new vigor on Tuesday. A scuffle between the supporters of the military-backed government and the activists resulted in the destruction of a state memorial dedicated to protesters killed in the country's nearly three years of turmoil, only hours it was inaugurated.

In  Olbia, Italy, the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, prized by the jet-set for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear seas, was a flood-ravaged mud bath on Tuesday after a freak torrential rainstorm killed at least 17 people, downed bridges and swept away cars. Olbia Mayor Gianni Giovannelli said the city had been destroyed by the "apocalyptic" storm.

In Nepal, people went to the polls to choose a special assembly to draw up a long-delayed constitution, a step toward stability in a nation still reeling from a 10-year communist revolt and the overthrow of a centuries-old  government.
