Kolkata, Sept 18: The statement made by West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee indicate that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was alive after 1945. She was basing the statement on the de-classified files released by the West Bengal government today.

The statement made by Mamata Banerjee is incidentally the first by a head of state (government) in which it has been stated that Netaji Bose may have been alive after 1945. The official line that has been taken by successive governments is that Bose had died in a plane crash at Taihoku, Taiwan on August 18 1945.

Files suggest Netaji was alive after 1945:

There were 64 files in all that were de-classified by the West Bengal government today. It has correspondence which go on to indicate that Netaji may have been alive after 1945. The West Bengal Chief Minister said that she was basing her statement on what she has read so far on Netaji.

The West Bengal Chief Minister also said that she had gone through some pages of the reports and it indicates that Netaji was alive even after 1945. There has been a mystery around Netaji and as a child I was curious to know the truth she said.

Snooping on the family:

The files that were de-classified today clearly suggest that the family of Netaji Bose was snooped upon. The files give an in-depth understanding of how nearly 14 Intelligence Bureau officials were deputed only to snoop on the family of Netaji Bose.

The files suggest that even after independence there the family members were snooped upon. This point led to some angry reactions by the family who questioned the need for such extensive snooping. The state of West Bengal was under the rule of the Congress till 1967.

Pressure on centre to de-classify files:

Mamata put the ball in the Union Government's court after she ordered the de-classification of the files. She said that if the centre has nothing to hide then why it is not de-classify the files.

I have done my duty and now it is up to the centre to de-classify the 130 files. The Home Ministry at Delhi however maintained that it is under no pressure to de-classify the files.
