Bangalore, Oct 1: UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi visited Mandya, Karnataka on Monday, Sept 30. It was her first visit to the state ever since her party has come to power defeating BJP in Karnataka. Mrs Gandhi, whose previous rally in the states was a flop show, must be overwhelmed as a massive crowd gathered in Mandya, a place which is considered to be a JDS home ground and stronghold.
It seems that Mrs Gandhi has begun giving tough competition to BJP PM candidate Narendra Modi who is well-known as a crowd-puller. Modi, who on Monday was present in Mumbai, showed another instance where his popularity among Indians has resulted in large turn out of people. It was a Modi wave in Mumbai where he went to inaugurate Mumbai Diamond Merchant Association's Diamond Hall at the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Bandra-Kurla Complex.
People went into a thunderous applause and cheered Sonia Gandhi
Mumbai airport and the venue of the inauguration ceremony were echoed with "Modi Modi" chant. Other speakers at the event were unable to deliver their speeches as audience wanted to listen only to their leader -- Modi. Amid repeated chants of "Modi! Modi", the Gujarat chief minister said the large crowd gathered to receive him would make the government in Delhi "jittery".
However, similar kind of scenario was observed during Mrs Gandhi's Mandya rally where people went into a thunderous applause and cheered her when she had begun her speech in Kannada. Even the crowd burst into shouting slogans in favour of chief minister Siddaramiah when Mrs Gandhi highlighted that the state government has fulfilled all promises which the party had vowed to do in their pre-poll manifesto.
Citing the response to Mrs Gandhi at Mandya, it seems that the Congress party, which has been facing criticism from across the nation for several corruption issues, might have regained its lost confidence ahead of Lok Sabha election which is expected to be held in 2014.
