New Delhi, Nov 6: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi received a great news ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha election which is expected to be held in 2014. US, which has been denying visa to the leader, now has welcomed him to apply for the same.

However, officials of the country clarified that visa policy of US will not be changed for the leader. The prime ministerial candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will have to wait for the review.

Modi is welcome to apply for a visa and await a review like any other applicant

During her daily news conference, State Department deputy spokesperson Marie Harf told, "No change in our longstanding visa policy. He's welcome to apply for a visa and await a review like any other applicant."

The media personnel had asked Harf regarding US' stand if Modi applies for a US visa. Answering to the questions, Harf added, "Visa applications are confidential, or at least the details of them. I can check on that, but not to my knowledge."

In 2005, Modi was denied a diplomatic visa and his existing tourist and business visa was revoked under the Immigration and Nationality Act, which makes a foreign government official responsible for severe violations of religious freedom ineligible for a travel document.
