New Delhi, May 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is special in many ways. From a super-majority win to unexpected participation in the swearing-in, Modi's start at the Centre has been truely noteworthy. In fact, he was the first to be sworn-in at the Forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan and the first Prime Minister to have all the SAARC invitees attending it together without any hesitations.

However, that is not all. Narendra Modi will be the first PM to have an exclusive tunnel from his 7 Race Course Road home till the Safdarjung airport. Sources say that it is getting ready for Modi. The tunnel will run through Kamal Ataturk Marg, Golf Course and Safdarjung Tomb and will meet at the Safdarjung helicopter hanger where it meets the ground.

The Safdarjung airport serves the VVIPs, including the Prime Ministers, President and the Vice-President, who can have a safe and closed transit in private jets, helicopters or a single-engine small aircraft to IGI airport.

Interestingly, the opening will be behind the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan inside the airport campus, away from any sight. LIkely to be operational within 2 months, it will be an easy and direct exit route to airport in case of emergency.

While the discussions on the construction of the road started in 2010, it was initiated under the supervision of the Intelligence Bureau later that year. As per the Special Protection Group (SPG) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, this tunnel would not only provide safety to the PM, it will also ensure that traffic on the road is not put off gear due to the PM's movement.

"Even the US and European countries have tunnels connecting the head of the state's residence to the airport by secret tunnels," said one of the senior intelligence officers.
