Mumbai, Sept 8: The accounts department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) is under scanner. A 145-page inquiry report on pre-monsoon nullah silting has pointed out that the payments have been made to the contractors but no third party audit has been done.
In lieu of this, civic chief Ajoy Mehta has directed that all payments to the contractors be stopped and all desilting projects be cancelled for the next year. The books gave a clear picture of the shoddy work done. It was reported how the contractors flouted the norms and assigned multiple projects to a clout of contractors. It also revealed how easy it was to manipulate BMC's vehicle tracking systems.
Mehta has asked additional municipal commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh to look into the matter and track those involved in the case. The latter is likely to submit the report this week.
