Mumbai Court: Shakti Mills rapists found guilty
While the photo journalist was raped on August 23 last year, the telephone operator was raped on July 21. Appreciating the courage of the journalist, who came forward and provided details of her rapists, the court held the four men guilty.
In fact, because of these details, the Mumbai police was able to track the culprits and put them behind bars. In the intervening night of August 22 and August 23, the police launched an unprecedented manhunt and arrested the five men. In a record time of 28 days, the police filed a 600-pager chargesheet and deposed 41 witnesses during the trial of the case that lasted for 7 months.
While four of the rapists were tried under regular judicial regulations, the fifth one will be tried by the juvenile court. The court has ordered a minimum of 20 years of imprisonment and a maximum of life imprisonment for the four accused.
