Manipur: Okram Ibobi Singh resigns, to stake claim to form government
His resignation, however, doesn't mark the end of the road for the Congress in Manipur as Ibobi Singh is likely to stake claim to form the government.
After much resistance, Manipur Chief Minister Ibobi Singh resigned from his post on Monday evening. Ibobi Singh had refused to relent to Governor Najma Heptullah's advice to resign from office since Sunday evening but eventually announced that he would resign.
His resignation, however, doesn't mark the end of the road for the Congress in Manipur as Ibobi Singh is likely to stake claim to form the government. He had been maintaining that he has the required support of 31 MLAs to form the government in Manipur.
His decision to resign and stake claim to form the government comes on a day when the BJP supported by NPP, AITC and independent candidates named N Biren Singh as its legislative party leader and Chief minister candidate. While the NPP has stated that it stands by the BJP it is to be seen how Ibobi Singh manages to consolidate the magic 31 figure.
