New Delhi, June 30: The National Investigating Agency which got custody of a key NSCN(K) member, Khumlo Abi Anal alias Ambition is hopeful of understanding the conspiracy that involved the Manipur attack in which 18 army soldiers were killed.

Anal is a key member of the NSCN(K) the dreaded militant group and his custody was handed over to the NIA yesterday.

Manipur: Deep rooted controversy found

The conspiracy surrounding the attack will give a clear picture of the players and how the NSCN(K) managed to beat local intelligence in Manipur to stage this attack. The role of insiders and also the local people will also come to light during the questioning of Anal, an NIA officer said.

The key conspirator:

Anal hails from Chandel and has built up a very good base out there. He was part of the planning and conspiracy to carry out the Manipur attack since day one. He is alleged to have put together a team of people who would give information about the movement of the army.

It appears as though his mechanism in Manipur was extremely strong and he had precise information about the movement of the army. He is also said to have met with the attackers right after the incident and was in the know that many were fleeing to Myanmar.

Anal has been a member of the NSCN(K) since long and is one of the most trusted aides of its leader S S Khaplang. Anal was largely responsible for the operations of the NSCN(K) in India after Khaplang began spending most of his time in Myanmar. He put together like minded outfits in India and was attempting to create a single umbrella under which these groups could operate.

Probe may reach up to Myanmar:

Investigators are sure that this attack could not have been staged without the help of some persons in Myanmar. India and Myanmar have been engaged in talks to tackle militancy. India has contended that most of the militants especially from the NSCN(K) faction are holed up on the Myanmar side of the border.

Indian agencies have often told the Home Ministry that there are few intelligence officials in Myanmar who view Khaplang and his cause with sympathy. They call the shots and this has helped the likes of Khaplang find a safe sanctuary in Myanmar.

During the questioning of Anal, the NIA would not just look into the Indian operations, but also dig out names of those contacts he has in Myanmar. He would also reveal information about the funding and the logistics that went into the making of this attack, NIA officers also informed.
