India's MOM -- Mangalyaan at work on Mars; ISRO reveals pictures

Bangalore, Sept 25: Hours after its entry into Mars orbit, India's ambitious space project -- Mangalyaan began its work on Wednesday, Sept 24. The robotic satellite, which will also study the Red Planet's atmosphere, sent pictures of the planet's surface.

In an official statement, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said, "We have received five pictures and these are under processing."

The agency also released a few of the images sent by Mangalyaan. According to sources, ISRO officials showed high quality pictures to Prime Minister Narendra Modi before releasing it to public.

India created history on Wednesday as the country has become the first Asian country to make it to Mars orbit and India is the fourth nation or geo-bloc to put a satellite into orbit around Mars.

Only the US, Russia and Europe have previously sent missions to Mars, and India has succeeded on its first attempt - an achievement that eluded even the Americans and the Soviets.
