While facing questions regarding Tapas Pal and Trinamool Congress's (TMC's) apparent action against him, Ms Banerjee said, "What do you want me to do about him, kill him?"
She claimed that Pal made a blunder by giving the statement which has maligned the party image, not only in West Bengal but in the whole country. According to the CM, her party had asked Pal to apologise for her remark and he did so. After receiving the apology letter from Pal, Ms Banerjee was quoted as saying, "He committed a blunder. He has been cautioned by the party. What else do you want me to do?"
Earlier her party made it clear that it would take strong action against Pal, who during one party gathering, had claimed, "If CPIM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) tries to kill and intimidate our workers... I will not spare them. I will let loose my men to rape their women."
In his apology letter, Pal apologised to his family and colleagues and "particularly to all women in our society and to those in the media who highlighted the issue," adding, "I have no excuses to offer. It was a gross error of judgement and deeply insensitive. It should not have happened. And I assure you it will not happen again. Once more, a humble apology."
