Sangli, Oct 11: While addressing a rally ahead of the Assembly Elections in Maharashtra, senior Nationalist Congress Party leader RR Patil stoked a controversy when he made a sexist comment.

At a rally in Sangli, he said," if Maharashtra Navnirman Sena's Sudhakar Khade, who was arrested on rape charges in 2007, wanted to be a MLA, then he could have committed the crime after the elections."

He further added,"Khade's supporters came to me and lend me their support. I asked them why were they doing so? They said their candidate was in the prison in a rape case."

Later, Patil said that he did not mean to hurt anyone. However, this is not the first time that Patil had made such outrageous remarks. Earlier, he had said that crime against women cannot be prevented even if guards were provided in every single household. He had, however, retracted from the controversial statement later.
