Shailesh's name had cropped up in the multi-crore Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board or Vyapam scam, for allegedly fixing the recruitment of 10 candidates as Grade III teachers.

Shailesh's father Ram Naresh Yadav, a former Uttar Pradesh CM, was appointed Madhya Pradesh Governor by Congress in 2011 during UPA rule. On 25th February 2015 Yadav was asked by the home ministry to resign following his name being probed in the exam scam.
