London loves Vedic maths, India confused
London, Dec 24: "Learning Vedic mathematics is fun, as it creates a sense of magic of numbers among children," says a former school principal who has taught Vedic maths to over 400 kids in last 15 years. No, he is not an Indian.

James Glover's St James Independent Schools is a primary school chain in London, which has been teaching its students Vedic mathematics for over a decade, says a The Hindu report.

James Glover, who was in Bangalore to attend an international Vedic science conference organised by the National Institute of Vedic Sciences, feels the subject offers "fast and efficient methods" for solving problems.

Glover visited over 800 Sanskrit schools in the district and he feels that the Sanskrit education in India needs to be streamlined. The students were not enthusiastic about learning the language, he said.

Mr. Glover, now teaches Maths and Sanskrit at the Herschel Grammar School in London.

Interestingly,India's national educational advisory body, National Council of Educational Research and Training, is yet to decide on introducing Vedic mathematics in schools in India. The proposal has been criticised in some quarters.

The multi-cultural private chain of three schools has kids aged between five and 13. Vedic mathematics in English, interspersed with Sanskrit hymns, is a compulsory subject for all the students.
