Bangalore, May 16: The results of the 2014 Lok Sabha election were declared on May 16. The NDA swept the elections, winning 334 of the 543 seats.

Modi said first time since Independence, a non Congress government has achieved majority in Lok Sabha. "Ours is a party that has fought Congress and believed in patriotism and it has been able to secure blessings of people," he said.

6.10 pm: BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi arrives in Vadodara, addresses the crowd. Modi said that he was here to thank all the people of Vadodara who voted for him. "After filing nomination, I have been able to give Vadodara barely 50 minutes and you have given me 5.7 lakh votes," he said.

He said that 'I salute the people of Vadodara. Nobody has ever achieved such a huge victory margin in LS polls.'

4.35 PM: Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi addressed the media today and said that he was responsible for the party's defeat. "I hold myself responsible for this defeat," says Congress VP Rahul Gandhi. Meanwhile Sonia Gandhi said: "I take full responsibility of the defeat suffered as I am the President of the party." 

Sonia said: "We hope that the new govt will not compromise on the country's unity."

7.21 am: Congress leader Ajay Maken today told NDTV that the Congress could not match up to the BJP's campaign. "We could not use the social media effectively," he said.

7.18 am: BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi will be watching the election results from Gandhinagar whereas Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi will be watching the results from Delhi.
