Kodanad murder case: After Kanagaraj's death, main accused Sayan injured in accident

Chennai, April 29: After the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa's ex-driver Kanagaraj death in road accident in Attur of Salem district on Friday night by a registered Karnataka car who was a suspect in Kodanad murder case, another accused in the case, Sayan was injured in a road accident in Palakkad.

According to reports, Sayan was hit by a truck when he travelling in a car with wife Vinu Priya (30) and five-year old daughter Neethu. Wife and daughter are believed to have died on the spot and Sayan was seriously injured.

The family was heading to Palakkad from Thrissur. The deceased were shifted to Palakkad government hospital.

Kanagaraj who was in touch with Sayan in connection with Kodanad estate killing was found dead under mysterious circumstances.

The police were on Kanakaraj's trail following the security guard's killing at Kodanad estate. The police who recovered CCTV footages from the estate had claimed that it showed men entering the property in an SUV and committing the murder.

Seven people were detained in connection with the murder case of a security guard of the Kodanad tea estate owned by former CM Jayalalithaa. Kanagaraj, who was sacked in Jaya in 2012 was suspected to be the mastermind behind the murder.

Out of the seven people detained, three of them were said to be from Thrissur of Kerala and close associates of the former driver. According to police, Kanagaraj started working as a driver of Jaya in Chennai. He often used to visit the Kodanad estate in Nilgiris district and gather all information on the bungalow and estate. Reports said that the former driver used to misuse the Jaya's name which was brought to her notice. He was sacked immediately and was sent out of Poes Garden. After Jaya's death, Supreme Court directed the police officers to arrest V K Sasikala and jailed.

Private security guards were appointed to look after the estate at 12 gates round the clock. Police sources said that the sacked driver used to work in the bakery at Kuniyamuthur of Coimbatore and had planned to burgle the bungalow after Jaya's death.

Sayan, a man from Thrissur who was befriended by Kanagaraj, had earlier arranged a five-member Thrissur gang. They struck the bungalow on April 24 around 1:30 am. The gang killed one security guard identified as Om Bahadur (51) and thrashed Krishna Bahadur (27) at the 10th gate of the tea estate.

Police said the gang broke into a bungalow and are believed to stolen valuables. However, the police in Thrissur revealed the details of the detained.

The detainees were identified as Satheeshan (42), Deepu (32), Santhosh (40). Police launched a manhunt to nab Kanagaraj and Sayan in Chennai and Kuniyamuthur.
