New Delhi, Dec 7: When Zabiuddin Ansari alias Abu Jundal was deported from Saudi Arabia to India, investigations showed that this Indian operative had done the job of a Hindi tutor to the ten terrorists who carried out the 26/11 attack at Mumbai.

Learning the dialect is an important training exercise for terrorists who slip into India for a long haul.

Terrorists

When Ajmal Kasab was questioned, he told his interrogators that he and the rest had undergone a Hindi speaking class for nearly a month so that they were familiar with the dialect when they slipped into India.

It has been many years since the 26/11 attack, but the fact that the ISI looks for tutors to teach terrorists Hindi still continues.

A well paid job:

Pakistan based terror groups recruit Indians for various roles. The primary reason why Indians are recruited is because each time there is a terror strike they would want to give it a local flavour.

If a terror attack is carried out by an Indian in India, then the finger does not point to Pakistan.

While foot soldiers, ideological mentors and spies form part of the recruitment drive, Hindi tutors are a major draw.

Intelligence Bureau (IB) officials say that a Hindi tutor in the Lashkar-e-Tayiba (LeT) would be paid Rs 30,000 a month.

In addition to this the LeT would also look after him well by providing housing and other benefits.

Pakistani terrorists have a heavy Punjabi accent. When they infiltrate into India for a long haul, they are required to live like normal persons for sometime before they get orders to carry out the attack.

However, to remain undercover they need to be familiar with the local ways and if they speak in that heavy Punjabi accent there is every chance of raising a doubt. It is here that the role of a Hindi tutor becomes important.

In addition to teaching the dialect, the tutor would also familiarise the terrorist with the local culture.

If the terrorist were to infiltrate into Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, then he would be taught about the local culture such as the manner in which people are addressed and also the food habits.

All this is done for a terrorist or a spy undertaking a long haul so that he looks like a local resident.
