The 88-foot tall idol at Deshapriyo park in south Kolkata was one of the most attractive destinations for all pandal hoppers in the city. But the stampede on the very first day spoilt the celebration.

Kolkata Police accused the puja organisers of not taking necessary precautions and security measures. Kolkata police chief was quoted as saying, "The crowds are unprecedented. The organisers have not taken the steps they were supposed to."

Hence, the cops decided to bar people from entering into the park. Police stopped 'darshan' of the idol indefinitely.

However, the cops assured that they would review the situation of the venue once again on Monday morning and would take the final call.

Artist Mintu Pal along with 40 other artists had been working on the idol and the pandal at Deshapriya Park for over two months.

The idol, which has been a major draw this Durga Puja, was equal to an eight-storey building, according to the puja committee organisers.
