Kolkata police to arrest builders for flyover collapse, leaving 25 dead

Kolkata, April 1: A day after the horrifying accident in Kolkata's Girish Park area, where an under construction flyover collapsed killing 25 people, the Kolkata Police is heading toward Hyderabad to arrest the builders.

Close to 90 people have been rescued from the rubbles, while few are still said to be stuck. 10 teams of NDRF, the paramilitary forces and the Kolkata Police are working jointly in the rescue operations of the victims, with the help of high-end tools like cranes, saws and jackhammers to look for those who may be trapped in debris.

Three cranes have been working overnight to clear the debris and speed-up the rescue operations. Meanwhile, a video went viral, showing how the flyover collapsed almost suddenly on pedestrians and vehicles on Thursday afternoon.

The 2 kilometer bridge has been under construction since 2009 and has missed several deadlines for completion. The buiders were given an 18-month deadline and nearly Rs. 165 crore to complete the project in 2009. However, only 60% of the work has been done in the past 7 years.

Expressing grief over the incident, chief minister Mamata Banerjee said that the responsible would not be spared.
