Cops refuse to hand over the body of 16-yr-old rape victim to family

, Jan 1: Police on Wednesday refused to handover the body of a 16-year-old gang rape victim who died in Kolkata on Tuesday, the last day of 2013.

The teen was gang raped on October 26. She survived the rape but died after she set herself on fire on December 23, thanks to threats by the accused and social humiliation she and her family had to face. Doctors said the girl died due to multiple organ failure and infection as a result of the burns.

The daughter of a taxi driver, she was gang raped a few metres away from her residence on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. Although the family shifted to another place after the incident, the threats and jibes by the accused and their associates continued.

The victim's father had lodged a police complaint against chief minister Mamata Banerjee, who holds the health portfolio. He has also lodged a complaint against the superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, where th girl was treated, for causing her death due to medical negligence. "My daughter was left unattended by hospital staff and there were several irregularities in her medication," the father said.
