Kerala youth enters Google’s Hall of fame for discovering bug in password

Tech giant Google has rewarded an engineering student from Kollam district in Kerala by enlisting him in the Google 'Hall of Fame' for discovering a bug in its password system.

Athul Jayaram was given the recognition for spotting a bug that allowed only eight characters for creating passwords to its accounts. He spotted that allowing password with single characters was a security lapse.

Google has always promoted people to report bugs and vulnerabilities in their products and help them better through their Google Vulnerability Reward Program.

Researchers and bug hunters are listed in the order of the severity of the vulnerability detected. Jayaram's name is featured on the Page 26 of the total 83 pages in the Hall of Fame. His reward will be determined in accordance with the gravity of the security black spot he detected.

Google's Hall of Fame features over 1000 people who have contributed in making Google products safer.

Apart from Google, technical giants like Microsoft and Facebook also runs programs such as 'Bug Bounty' to reward the security researchers to report issues, and to encourage more people to help keep the applications secure.

According to Jayaram, he was always found of ethical hacking. He learned about ethical hacking in 2013. He has already mastered in PHP, ASP, ASPX, C++, Java and Javascript.

Jayaram is an engineering student at the Amity University in Noida. He is also pursuing MBA along with his B Tech. His father Dr Ananda works at the Divya Hospital in Kollam, while mother Dr Lekha works at the Government hospital in Kollam. His sister Lijina is also a doctor.
