Kerala: Girl students protest against college, seeks gender equality
Thiruvananthapuram, March 19: The capital of Kerala on Wednesday, March 18 evening witnessed a unique protest organised by a group of girls against their college authorities, seeking gender equality.
A group of 250 students from the College of Engineering in Thiruvananthapuram staged a sit in protest, demanding the repeal of hostel restrictions imposed on them by the authorities.
The students are demanding for a relaxation in their hostel timings. They sought a change in the current time schedule of 6.30 pm to 10 pm, as like the male students.
The bold youngsters also created a Facebook page in order to convey their messages among the public. They have also organised discussions and debates in the college to attract the eyes of administration. However, the response from the college was negative.
A girl who took part in the protest said, "We have been trying to break our curfew for over two weeks. Authorities haven't responded. It's gender discrimination because the boys are allowed to do anything."
The vibrant protest by girl students was also an exhibition of women's strength.
