Kanpur train accident: Why UP police does not believe the ISI theory

The Uttar Pradesh railway police is not yet convinced that the Kanpur train accident was the handiwork of the ISI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an election rally in Uttar Pradesh held last week had termed the accident as a conspiracy hatched from across the border.

The UP railways continued to maintain that the accident that took place last year in which nearly 150 people were killed was not act of sabotage. It was due to fatigue of the railway track Gopal Gupta, Director General, Railways, Uttar Pradesh told a conference organised by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu.

A video conference had been organised by Prabhu to discuss rail safety measures in the wake of the recent train accidents. Gupta told the conference that the Kanpur incident was due to fatigue of the railway tracks. He also said that there were no signs of explosives.

The railways police of UP however says that the final outcome of the case will be known once the National Investigation Agency completes its probe. The NIA too has not found any major lead to suggest that the Kanpur train accident was a case of sabotage. It has however found that an ISI module had planted a pressure cooker bomb on a railway track in Bihar. A team of the NIA also visited Nepal to probe Shamshul Hoda who is the mastermind in the case.

During the questioning Hoda confessed to the Bihar incident, but denied having played any role in the Kanpur accident. The NIA is also probing the train accident at Kuneru, Andhra Pradesh. In that case preliminary investigations suggest that it was the handiwork of the naxalites.
